Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university and three (3)+ years relevant work experience -OR- seven (7)+ years
    relevant work experience.
  • Two (2)+ years supervisory experience at a machine shop / machined parts manufacturer.
  • Collaborative and results driven; finds innovative solutions to solve problems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent conflict resolution capability and interpersonal savvy.
  • Willing and able to be the sole supervisor of plant and people during second shift operations.
  • Able to competently interpret engineering drawings and other technical documents.
  • Intermediate+ skill using Microsoft Excel for practical application.
  • Trustworthy; capable of maintaining confidentiality related to business activities.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of principles related to machined parts manufacturing:
    • Safety and ergonomics (hazards and preventions);
    • Shop mathematics (arithmetic; algebra; geometry; statistics);
    • CNC machine controls (motion and position; coordinates; offsets);
    • metal cutting (tools; processes; chip formation; fluids; speed and feed)
    • work holding devices (chucks; collets; vises; clamping; supporting and locating)
    • GD&T (geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing);
    • blueprint reading (drawing, dimensions and notes);
    • measurement devices (common gaging and inspection tools);
    • hole, thread and surface finish standards and inspection methods;
    • troubleshooting and root cause corrective action methodologies.
  • APICS CPIM (Certified in Production & Inventory Management) or equivalent professional credential.
  • Experience using IBM iSeries or an equivalent Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform.
  • Comfortable using business intelligence software to create virtual dashboards from data warehouses.


Job Description 


With and through his or her Team Captains, the Production Supervisor (Fabrication - 2nd Shift) leads and manages
the hourly workforce to effectively and efficiently meet manufacturing work-flow requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the first shift Senior Production Supervisor to properly deploys resources to efficiently execute
    the production schedule.
  • Enacts and monitors workplace safety and housekeeping measures; ensures proper response to and logging of safety incidents.
  • In the event a security alarm is triggered, serves as first level EPS emergency contact.
  • Accountable for adherence to plant shutdown (end of shift and end of week) procedures.
  • Cross-functional leadership: works with/through support functions to eliminate constraints and to achieve business results.
  • Interprets and analyzes data to discover insights; utilizes performance metrics in decision making process.
  • Predicts and resolves labor issues effectively, knowing when to escalate vs. defuse; properly and privately handles conflict resolution and other highly confidential employee information.
  • Approaches performance management as an ongoing process (clear expectations; timely feedback; regular coaching; performance check-ins; conducts formal performance reviews; etc.).
  • Leads regular communications with team pertaining to corporate and departmental performance.  Serves as a link between subordinates and upper management.
  • Review training of workforce to ensure they are properly trained, prior to assigning quality related tasks.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Production Manager.

Quality Control Supervisor Expectations:

  • Will have a fundamental understanding of quality philosophies, principles, systems, methods, tools, standards.
  • Will understand organizational and team dynamics, customer expectations and satisfaction, supplier relations and performance,
    training, interpersonal relationships, and professional ethics.
  • Will have a fundamental understanding of a quality system and its development, documentation and implementation to domestic,
    ISO 9001 and related standards.
  • Will be able to implement quality programs, including tracking, analyzing, reporting and problem solving.
  • Will be able to plan, control and assure product and process quality in accordance with quality principles, which include planning
    processes, material control, acceptance sampling, measurement systems and SPC.
  • Understands problem-solving and quality improvement tools and techniques. This includes knowledge of management and planning
    tools, quality tools, preventive, predictive and corrective actions, and how to overcome barriers to quality improvements.
  • Will be able to acquire and analyze data using appropriate standard quantitative methods across a spectrum of business environments
    to facilitate process analysis and improvements.

Education and/or Experience:

Must have four years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of quality engineering and or management. Certified Quality
Engineering status is a major plus for this position.

A minimum of two years of this experience must be in a decision-making position. “Decision-making” is defined as the authority to define,
execute, or control projects, processes and to be responsible for the outcome.  

General Job Responsibilities:

       I. Oversee day-to-day operation of Inspection and Calibration departments assisting in setting priorities, clearing constraints
          and roadblocks and providing additional general assistance as required.

      II. Supervise assigned Inspection and Calibration Quality technician including job evaluations, discipline, development,
          and pay advancement considerations.

    III. Review/approve documents related to quality inspections and resolution of non-conformances.

    IV. Participate in interactions with customers regarding production part quality issues and initial run review
         and approval processes i.e. PPAP (Production Part Approval Process).

     V. Participate in the maintenance and continuous improvement of Quality initiatives including:

A. Establishing Process Control Plans used for in sampling/charting Inspection and Calibration systems.

B. Reducing the cost of Quality by assisting in efforts to reduce scrap and returns.

C. Gemba walks

D. Generate and update procedures related to Quality operations.


    VI. Support the drive for more predictive and preventative quality focus vs maintenance and reactionary quality

A. Support APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) as we move in this direction on new product programs.

B. Attend Design and Process review meetings as needed.

C. Move to systems audit and evaluation at points of manufacture vs inspection after manufacture for both MCN 
    situations and for new part numbers being run and qualified.


   VII. Reports to Quality Manager on planning, and status of quality system objectives and monitoring.

 VIII.  Must be able to multi-task effectively and work with a sense of urgency.

CNC Computerized Machining

Set-up and Operation/Milling and Turning

Humphrey Products Company, a Kalamazoo-based manufacturer of fluid-control products and custom engineered solutions, has openings in their machining department’s 2nd shift operation which consists of four 10-hour days (M-Th/3:30 PM to 1:30 AM). 

All candidates must have a HSD or GED, be able to operate multi-axis CNC equipment, read blue prints, use basic machining gages, and understand standard machining terminology and principles.  Candidates must also demonstrate good judgment in decision making and problem solving.  Candidates interested in highest level work must also demonstrate machine set up capabilities.  Extensive knowledge of cutting tool technology, speed and feed selection, process control techniques and GD&T will merit special consideration.  Ideal candidates will have a minimum of 5 years of experience. Leadership experience will also warrant special consideration.  Humphrey specializes in short run production so candidates must also enjoy a variety of work.
