Humphrey Products Company is a Kalamazoo based manufacturer of pneumatic valves and control components used in industries such as medical, instrumentation, distribution, agriculture, and transportation has an opportunity for an Assembly and Test Manufacturing Engineer.

This position requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering and a minimum of internship experience if you are a recent graduate. Relevant experience is desired in one or more of the areas listed below.

  • Design, build and implementation of manual test and assembly fixtures.
  • Design, procurement and implementation of automated assembly and test systems.
  • Design, procurement and implementation of molding presses, dies and support equipment.
  • Process troubleshooting experience with mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Experience with fluid power components, such as valves, flow meters, pressure sensing and regulation.
  • Methods, time study and ergonomics analysis skills.
  • 3D CAD experience with product, tooling or fixture design.
  • Process documents such as PFDs, PFMEA, PCPs and work instructions.
  • Change over and set up reduction.
  • SPC and other quality control methods and procedures.
  • Cost estimating and capital project cost justification a plus.
  • PLC controls knowledge a plus.

Reports to:  Supply Chain Manager

General Description of Job:  The buyer is responsible for the selection of the most appropriate suppliers of goods and services to the company on the basis of price, quality, delivery and post-sale support. This responsibility extends to the day-to-day management and growth of the relationship with the suppliers’ various technical and commercial personnel. Additionally, and as required, the buyer should be able to facilitate the extension of these relationships to other Humphrey technical and commercial personnel. Because we manufacture relatively complex assemblies the buyer should have very good mechanical aptitude and a relatively technical background. The successful candidate will work in a lean, fast-paced and rewarding work environment, where he/she will have the support and encouragement for developing a great career and achieving exceptional performance to help HP Company reach its goals.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Manage the relationship between Humphrey and the supplier’s technical personnel.
  2. Develop market knowledge and contacts for technology associated with Humphrey’s products.
  3. Use available tools to identify and evaluate prospective suppliers for all different types of parts.
  4. Prepare bid analysis and negotiate purchasing contracts.
  5. Monitor suppliers’ performances and manage all aspects of supplier relationships and development.
  6. Participate in cross-functional teams and works with Operations to understand material/service requirements, clarify specific deliverables, and ensure compliance with company standards and processes.
  7. Serve as the primary liaison between Humphrey and the supplier in the event of any technical or commercial conflict (quality issues, delivery issues, pricing errors, etc.)
  8. Coordinate supplier qualification process including commercial, technical and compliance (ISO9000) matters.
  9. Ensure that appropriate corrective and preventative actions are implemented for any supplier- related production interruptions.
  10. Manage purchase from end to end such as creating RFQs, issuing and following-up with suppliers for RFQ responses, placing purchase orders and continued support.
  11. Other duties as assigned

 

Required Skills and Education

  1. Bachelor’s degree required and a minimum 1-3 years of purchasing or related experience in manufacturing environment required.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills (grammar, spelling, language usage, etc.)
  3. Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  4. Strong leadership abilities to perform independently
  5. High mechanical aptitude and/or broad technical experience with engineered components---solenoids, molded rubber, plastic parts, and tight tolerance machined parts.
  6. Ability to work under tight deadlines and in occasionally stressful situations.
  7. High degree of planning and organization skills required
  8. Eagerness to learn

 

Key Measurables:

  1. Low number of production interruptions and/or product non-compliances (Material Complaint Notices) resulting from suppliers.
  2. Annual cost improvement targets set then met or exceeded.
  3. Ability to reduce overall supply chain management costs (through increased compliance, supplier consolidation, increased dock to stock activities, etc.)

Machinist

Set-up and Operation/Milling and Turning

Humphrey Products Company, a Kalamazoo-based manufacturer of pneumatic valves and control components used in industries such as medical, instrumentation, distribution, agriculture and transportation has openings in the Machining Department’s 2nd shift which consists of four 10-hour days (M-Th/3:30 pm to 1:30 am). 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to operate multi-axis CNC equipment, read blueprints, use basic machining gages, and understand standard machining terminology and principles.
  • Must be able to set up machines and work with a defined process to produce quality products. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate good judgement in decision making and problem solving.

Special consideration will be given to applicants for: extensive knowledge of cutting tool technology, speed and feed selection, process control techniques, GD&T and leadership experience.

Humphrey Products specializes in short run production so candidates must also enjoy a variety of work. The pay rate will be set upon candidates experience level.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university and three (3)+ years relevant work experience -OR- seven (7)+ years
    relevant work experience.
  • Two (2)+ years supervisory experience at a machine shop / machined parts manufacturer.
  • Collaborative and results driven; finds innovative solutions to solve problems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent conflict resolution capability and interpersonal savvy.
  • Willing and able to be the sole supervisor of plant and people during second shift operations.
  • Able to competently interpret engineering drawings and other technical documents.
  • Intermediate+ skill using Microsoft Excel for practical application.
  • Trustworthy; capable of maintaining confidentiality related to business activities.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of principles related to machined parts manufacturing:
    • Safety and ergonomics (hazards and preventions);
    • Shop mathematics (arithmetic; algebra; geometry; statistics);
    • CNC machine controls (motion and position; coordinates; offsets);
    • metal cutting (tools; processes; chip formation; fluids; speed and feed)
    • work holding devices (chucks; collets; vises; clamping; supporting and locating)
    • GD&T (geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing);
    • blueprint reading (drawing, dimensions and notes);
    • measurement devices (common gaging and inspection tools);
    • hole, thread and surface finish standards and inspection methods;
    • troubleshooting and root cause corrective action methodologies.
  • APICS CPIM (Certified in Production & Inventory Management) or equivalent professional credential.
  • Experience using IBM iSeries or an equivalent Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform.
  • Comfortable using business intelligence software to create virtual dashboards from data warehouses.

 

Job Description 

General:

With and through his or her Team Captains, the Production Supervisor (Fabrication - 2nd Shift) leads and manages
the hourly workforce to effectively and efficiently meet manufacturing work-flow requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the first shift Senior Production Supervisor to properly deploys resources to efficiently execute
    the production schedule.
  • Enacts and monitors workplace safety and housekeeping measures; ensures proper response to and logging of safety incidents.
  • In the event a security alarm is triggered, serves as first level EPS emergency contact.
  • Accountable for adherence to plant shutdown (end of shift and end of week) procedures.
  • Cross-functional leadership: works with/through support functions to eliminate constraints and to achieve business results.
  • Interprets and analyzes data to discover insights; utilizes performance metrics in decision making process.
  • Predicts and resolves labor issues effectively, knowing when to escalate vs. defuse; properly and privately handles conflict resolution and other highly confidential employee information.
  • Approaches performance management as an ongoing process (clear expectations; timely feedback; regular coaching; performance check-ins; conducts formal performance reviews; etc.).
  • Leads regular communications with team pertaining to corporate and departmental performance. Serves as a link between subordinates and upper management.
  • Review training of workforce to ensure they are properly trained, prior to assigning quality related tasks.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Production Manager.

We are looking for a motivated person willing to learn and grow in a Team environment in our Quality area.  In this role you will be responsible for performing visual and dimensional inspections of incoming parts, raw materials, subassemblies, and final assemblies according to written procedures and specifications. You may also be occasionally called upon to assist Calibration in rounding up and returning gages, assist in providing measurement services as layouts or special evaluations related to non-conformances and assist in the evaluation of returned products in the RGA area. 

Job Duties Include:

  1. Develop a basic understanding of the inspection and calibration processes.
  2. Assist in verifying conformance of incoming parts and other inspection activities as required.
  3. Review of Quality records such as Calibration Certs., PCP’s, Control charts, etc. for accuracy.
  4. Organize and summarize inspection/test results and prepare reports utilizing good documentation practices.
  5. Initiate Material Complaint Notice reports on nonconforming material and provide support to Manufacturing/Assembly and Engineering when required.
  6. Assist in RGA (Returned Goods Area) as required.
  7. Assist in retrieving and returning gages for calibration (gage wrangling).
  8. Conducting R & R Studies and Capability studies.
  9. Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes cooperation with customers, vendors, co-workers and management.
  10. Other duties as assigned by management.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Able to work in a Self Managed Work Team environment and follow written or oral instructions.
  2. Must be thorough and meticulous, giving great attention to details related to measurement and instrument verification.
  3. Basic understanding of prints and specifications, tolerancing, uncertainties and GD&T and their interpretation, would be a plus.
    1. If not familiar, willing to complete approved course(s) to meet competency required.
  4. Basic understanding of precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, height gauges, thread gauges and being able to accurately report the results is a plus.

  5. Understand fundamentals of measuring, 10:1 rule etc..
  6. Maintain parts history files and written reports on nonconforming parts and materials.
  7. Be capable of reading and interpreting SOI's and Process Workbooks with help.
  8. Meet attendance criteria as described in the employee handbook.
  9. Understanding the concept of traceability as it pertains to product, material, and calibration activities.
  10. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.) and willing to complete approved courses to meet competency required.
  11. If currently an HP employee or contracted worker, you must meet the requirements for advancement as described in applicable employee handbook.

Humphrey Products is offering a limited number of summer student positions in certain departments.

To be eligible: Students must have graduated from high school, be 18-25 years of age, must be able to work 40 hours per week during the summer months (May – August) and be enrolled or in the process of being enrolled in an accredited college or trade school. (Students who have worked at Humphrey previous years must reapply each year.)

Summer employment will be terminated on a pre-arranged date. Students should plan to work a minimum of 10 weeks.
